How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username: A Step-by-Step Guide
Learn how to claim your unique WhatsApp username before the full rollout, with tips on using the username generator and setting up the username key for enhanced privacy.
Step 1: Update WhatsApp to the Latest Version
Ensure you have the most recent version of WhatsApp installed on your device. Go to your app store (Google Play or Apple App Store) and check for updates. The username feature is available in version 2.24.10 or later.
Step 2: Access the Username Settings
Open WhatsApp and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. If the feature is available in your region, you'll see an option to create or reserve a username. If not, wait for the in-app notification indicating availability.
Using the Built-in Username Generator
If you're unsure what username to choose, tap the Generate button. The tool will suggest available usernames based on your name or interests. You can refresh the suggestions until you find one you like.
Step 3: Choose a Unique Username
Your username must be between 3 and 35 characters and can include letters, numbers, and underscores. Avoid using special characters or spaces. Once you enter a username, WhatsApp will check its availability. If taken, try variations or use the generator.
Step 4: Set Up the Username Key (Optional)
For added privacy, enable the Username Key feature. This requires anyone messaging you for the first time to know both your exact username and the key. Go to Settings > Privacy > Username Key and create a unique key. Share it only with trusted contacts.
Step 5: Confirm and Reserve
Once you've chosen a username and optionally set a key, tap Reserve. Your username is now locked in. You can change it anytime by revisiting the Username settings. Remember, your phone number remains hidden from new contacts once your username is active.
